Did you get a good nights sleep? Turns out a lot of people don’t and it can bring down your overall health.
But who suffers from sleep disorders?
“Everyone. The truth is sleep disorders affect all of us all ages, all sexes and they are significant and in a large percentage of our population,” says Dr. Jamil Sulieman, doctor of pulmonary medicine at Castle Medical Center.
There are two basic types of sleep disorders.
“Twenty-five to thirty percent of people have suffered from insomnia and 25 million people probably have sleep apnea,” Dr. Sulieman says.
Lack of sleep is one thing – but it can lead to other health problems.
“The truth is that both of these problems cause or are associated with illnesses. Hypertension, for example, is affected both by insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea,” Sulieman explains.
But the list goes on, starting with diabetes.
“Heart disease, irregular heart rhythms, kidney failure – many of the major diseases that we are concerned about.”
Insomnia is the inability to go to sleep or stay asleep. That’s a matter of quantity.
“Sleep apnea is in the group that are quality problems. People who have sleep apnea go to sleep or think that they are sleeping but they have repetitive blockages of their airway throughout the night which disrupts their sleep and causes secondary problems,” Dr. Sulieman says.
