Such a sad sight to see. Flames tearing through an Aiea townhouse.
The fire broke out just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The people made it out safely but the homeowner’s pet didn’t.
Enrique Torres shot this video as flames engulfed the garage across his home.
He lives in a Wailuna townhouse community.
He heard a commotion going on outside and went out to check.
“And I looked down there and the gentleman’s car had a fire in the engine compartment,” said Enrique Torres. “We came down to convince him to get away because it looked like the fire was really getting out of control. And then a little later it really started to erupt.”
By the time firefighters had arrived the flames had already spread to the upstairs dining room and kitchen area.
Fire officials say a woman lives in the home. And her friend had just parked in the garage shortly before the fire started.
“It came from the car in the engine compartment of the ford that was in there, he was driving a ford. and then it got hotter and hotter, and expanded and really erupted,” shared Torres.
The homeowner and her friend made it out safety.
“She was concerned that she wasn’t able to retrieve her cat that was in the house,” said Torres. “And I asked some of the firemen, because she asked me about it. So I asked a couple of the firemen if they had seen it, and they said they looked around but it was really smoky in there, and they didn’t find the cat.”
“Thankfully no one was injured. But unfortunately the owner had a pet cat which unfortunately didn’t make it out,” said Honolulu Fire Captain Carlton Yamada.
We went back to the home Sunday morning and here’s what’s left.
The two vehicles in the garage were gutted.
And the house — unlivable.
The damage is estimated at $200,000.
And even though the homeowner and neighbors say the car fire started the house fire.
An investigator hasn’t determined an official cause yet.
