Man arrested after fatal pedestrian crash

Honolulu Police have arrested a man in connection with Friday’s fatal pedestrian accident in Kapahulu.

Hailame Vave, of Kahuku, was driving a pickup truck on Kapahulu Avenue when he hit a man who was crossing the street in a mid-block crosswalk.

Hiro Shihara, 88, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in extremely critical condition, where he later died.

His family says Shihara was crossing the street to go to the bus stop.

Vave, 53, was booked for negligent homicide on Saturday.

He has not been charged.
