Honolulu mayor declares safe boating week

HONOLULU (AP) – Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is declaring the third week of May safe boating week.

Caldwell on Friday signed a proclamation declaring May 18-24 National Safe Boating Week.

The Coast Guard sponsors the week to raise awareness of and encourage safe boating practices.

Fourteenth Coast Guard District Commander Rear Adm. Charles W. Ray says preparation saves lives. He says the rescue of six mariners off Maui last week shows the importance of preparation.

He says the captain of the vessel radioed the Coast Guard for help and ordered passengers to put on life jackets and enter a life raft. He says this helped save the passengers.

The Coast Guard says it’s important for mariners to have life jackets, emergency position indicating beacons and communications equipment on vessels.
