Concerned Waimanalo residents spoke out Monday night against a planned road that would run through a new subdivision
They believe it will create traffic safety issues in an already congested area.
The plan is to extend Kaulukanu Street through the new subdivision and into two narrow streets.
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands says extending the road will provide an additional entrance and exit for the subdivision.
Residents also say they were never told about the plan.
“They don’t ask the community for help,” said Waimanalo resident Noe Aguiar. “I mean, they don’t tell the community what is going on. We deserve to know what is happening in our community. We live there. We’re not strangers.”
“We do understand their apprehension and concerns,” said Darrell Young, Department of Hawaiian Homelands. “We will be working with the elected leaders and community leaders and the community to address this.”
44 homes are planned for the 7 acre subdivision.
