HONOLULU (AP) – Former Honolulu Symphony pops conductor Matt Catingub is forming the state’s first independent pops orchestra.
The new orchestra called Hawaii Pops plans to hold its first performance on Sept. 14. It will offer a series of concerts at the Hawaii Convention Center during a season running from September through May.
Hawaii Pops will feature popular artists and music performed by a full orchestra, a jazz or big band orchestra and small ensembles.
Artistic Director Catingub said in a statement Tuesday Hawaii Pops will enrich Honolulu’s culture and arts scene.
The Honolulu Symphony ended 110 years of history when it declared bankruptcy and ceased operations a few years ago. Classical music supporters have since formed a new symphony called the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
