Big Island police are trying to identify a man who died after being struck by a vehicle in Puna early Wednesday morning.
The incident happened just after 3 a.m. on Highway 11 near the 18 mile marker in Glenwood.
Police say a 55-year-old Hilo man was driving a 2013 Toyota pickup truck and traveling south on the highway when he struck a man on the roadway.
Fire rescue personnel rushed the man to the Hilo Medical Center where he later died.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the victim.
He is described as a Caucasian male in his late 20′s to early 30′s. He’s about 5’9″ and 180 pounds. He also has long black hair, a beard, and mustache. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (808) 935-3311.
Police do not believe speed, alcohol, or drugs were involved.
Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
This is the 12th traffic fatality this year compared to 11 at the same time last year.
