The traffic mess on the Pali Highway is just a preview of what’s to come. In fact, the repairs the Department of Transportation is making now will be ripped out next year for a more extensive project.

The resurfacing project that’s been going on for the past two weeks is just a temporary fix.

It’s a $400,000 bandage that will be ripped off when the $14 million project begins next year.

Drivers heading into town on the Pali Highway have been stuck in traffic and they have lots to say about it.

“I don’t like it,” one driver said.

“It was backed up almost to the tunnels,” another driver said.

From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., road crews are fixing some of the trouble spots on the busy highway.

But why only fix patches of the highway? If a long-term fix is right around the corner, why not just do it all at once?

KHON2 asked the transportation department if any of this makes sense.

“It basically comes down to money. We don’t have the $14 million at this time to do the full resurfacing so we have about $400,000 that’s taking care of these areas,” DOT spokesperson Caroline Sluyter said.

KHON2: “These ares that are being repatched will be ripped out again next year?”

DOT spokesperson Caroline Sluyter: “Yes.”

That’s not exactly what drivers sitting in traffic want to hear.

If you think this is bad, it’s just a glimpse of what it will be like next year.

“The upcoming project in 2014 will be much longer project. They’ll be going further down than the surface and really taking care of the underlying problems,” Sluyter said.

The temporary project is schedule to wrap up Friday… weather depending.

The Likelike Highway and H-3 Freeway are good alternate routes.

Also starting Wednesday is a traffic signal modernization project. There will be lane closures in both directions on the Pali Highway at the School Street intersection. The project will continue for about two months.
