Maui firefighters rescue couple who plunged 250 feet down embankment

The Maui Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle that had driven off the road one mile above the Haleakala Visitors Center on Crater Road.

Park rangers relayed to fire crews that there were two patients that had drove their vehicle off an embankment about 250 feet down a gulch.

Units arrived to the scene and found two victims, a male and female, sitting up on the vehicle, which was on its side. Two park rangers were nearby.

The female sustained injuries to her neck, back, and hip with lacerations to her arms and head.

The male sustained a laceration to his head and had pain to his ribs.

The female victim was airlifted to a landing zone located at Hosmers Grove. She was transported from Hosmers Grove by Maui Medevac to the hospital.

The male was also airlifted to Hosmers Grove where he was transported by American Medical Response to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Both victims were transported in serious condition.

Maui officials say the couple was visiting from North Carolina.
