HONOLULU – After a rousing series-opening win on Friday, the University of Hawai’i Rainbow baseball team saw its bats tempered in a 5-0 loss to No. 4 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Justin Garza’s (9-0) fastball proved to be too much for the Rainbow lineup. He tossed eight scoreless innings allowing five hits and posting just one walk. Conner George and Andre Real each had a pair hits to lead UH.

Garza was lifted after eight innings at which time the Rainbows (9-28, 4-10 Big West) put together a mini ninth-inning rally. After Marc Flores drew a bases loaded walk to reliever J.D. Davis, who also had five hits and two runs as the DH, the ‘Bows had the bases loaded with just one out. Fullerton got a force play at home though on the next at bat and Kalei Hanawahine followed with a game-ending pop up to right field.

Davis led the Titans (35-7, 11-3 BWC) at the plate, adding a pair of runs and an RBI to his 5-5 performance. Carlos Lopez added three hits including a double and two runs.

UH starter Matt Cooper (2-6) lasted just three innings, allowing three runs, two unearned, on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Scott Squier started the fourth inning and finished the game. He gave up two Titan runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Fullerton jumped on the scoreboard early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Matt Chapman (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) drew a bases loaded walk from Cooper, and Davis scored from third on Austin Wobrock’s first error of the season. Wobrock was quick to recover on the play, picking up his muffed ball and throwing out Jake Jeffries (1-3) who had rounded third and was attempting to return to the bag.

The Titans added to their lead with one run in the third inning. A double steal followed by a passed ball allowed Davis to score from third to push the lead to 3-0.

CSF then added one run each in the seventh and eighth innings. Lopez doubled to open the seventh and was driven home on a Davis single, and Austin Diemer’s RBI-double one inning later give his team a 5-0 lead.

The ‘Bows and Titans conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.
