We are always looking for ways to be green and one of the latest ways could be right under our feet.

It’s carpeting developed by Mohawk called SmartStrand – the carpet is made in part with renewable resources. Hawaii Home Expo’s Lacey Mikulich told us why she favors this carpet.

“I have a seven month old and he loves to put everything in his mouth and he crawls everywhere. Obviously I want him to be safe,” she says.

That’s a priority for Lacey.

“It’s made with polymer made by DuPont called Sorona. And it’s actually partially made with corn – product is actually integrated into the carpet. It’s not sprayed on like most carpets,” she explains.

All right, it seems to be environmentally friendly – - but is it durable?

“This actually has an extended warranty, it’s one of their top end products. They installed this carpet, this material into a rhino cage for two weeks,” Lacey says.

You heard right – the company claims it put the carpeting in a cage with Rikko the Rhino and left it there for two weeks with Rikko doing – well, everything rhinos do.

“Then they cleaned the carpet after two weeks, and sure enough, it was as good as new…so, it’s meant to endure, it’s not meant to break down,” Lacey says.
