Honolulu firefighters rescue cat stuck in car engine

5-5 CAT

Honolulu firefighters had an unusual rescue in the Ala Moana area.

Officials say a pet cat was stuck in the engine of a car.

It happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Kaheka Street around 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Hawaiian Humane Society was also called in to help get Shayna, the cat, out of the car.

After several unsuccessful attempts, firefighters finally got Shayna out.

“She was caught between pipes and wires and all kinds of things,” said Audrey Lake of the Hawaiian Humane Society. “I was just trying to make it easy for her to get out. She was so frightening she was stiff and we were just trying to get all of her feet in one place so she could go out the top.”

Lake said she’s responded to similar calls before, but none in a car engine.

The cat was reunited with her owner and did not appear to be injured.
