Third inmate death in 2 months concerns public safety director

Mark Davis

The head of the Public Safety Department says there’s a crisis happening behind prison walls.

Several inmates have died in custody recently.

On Tuesday, 25-year-old Mark Davis Jr. was found dead, alone in his cell at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

In an email sent to state Sen. Wil Espero Wednesday, public safety director Ted Sakai said Davis’ death is the second in a holding unit in one week and the third in the same unit in about two months.

“I am emphasizing to our staff that we have a crisis on our hands,” says Ted Sakai.

“I’m asking that the attorney general’s office do a review and evaluation of procedures and the situation at OCCC,” says Sen. Espero, Public Safety committee chair.

“There’s certainly moment to pause because of these suicides that are happening too often, too frequently in this short time period,” says Senator Espero.

The Department of Public Safety hasn’t revealed exactly how Davis died, but said there was no sign of foul play or suicide.
