A Canadian man who died Tuesday afternoon while hiking across a lava field on the Big Island has been identified.
Big Island police say Riccardo Scagliati, 57, of Victoria, British Columbia was hiking with a companion when they got lost near the Kalapana Gardens subdivision.
Scagliati became disoriented, overheated, and fell to the ground.
His hiking companion, a 57-year-old man, went to find help and more water, but he was unable to find his way back to Scagliati’s location.
Fire Department personnel later found Scagliati’s lifeless body with the help of a helicopter.
