LONG BEACH, Calif. – Stephen Ventimilia had a pair of hits and two runs scored but it wasn’t enough to prevent the University of Hawai’i Rainbow baseball team from losing 6-2 to Long Beach State on Friday at Blair Field.

Conner George and Kaeo Aliviado both had a hit and an RBI to lead the ‘Bows (11-32, 6-13 Big West). George broke out of a hitting slump when he gave UH a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the first inning. Ventimilia (2-3, 2 R) scored from second on the play after getting a leadoff base hit.

Connor Little (1-6) suffered the loss for the ‘Bows. He pitched seven complete innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Shane Carle (3-8) pitched a complete game for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Zack Rivera and Zach Miller both batted 2-4 for Long Beach State (23-24, 10-9 Big West) with Rivera posting an RBI and Miller adding two runs scored.

Little was on his way to a stellar outing until the Dirtbags plated two runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Zack Belanger (1 H, 1 R) and Miller opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and both later scored on RBI ground outs as LBSU took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning. Rivera padded the lead when he ripped a double down the left field line one inning later to score Juan Avila from the second.

The Dirtbags then busted the game open with three runs in the seventh inning. After Jeff McNeil (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) doubled in Miller, Colton Vaughn (1 H, 2 RBI) delivered a two-RBI base hit to give Long Beach State a 6-1 lead.

Ventimilia doubled to start the eighth inning and later came home on an Aliviado ground out to complete the scoring.

Hawai’i and Long Beach State continue their series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT).
