Thursday night, Kailua Intermediate School honored the 13-year-old Kalama, who was killed in a crash last week.

Kamalani’s mother was on hand to accept the Outstanding Peer Educator award on her daughter’s behalf.

“This is just one of the many more achievements that my daughter was to receive in her lifetime and her life was cut short,” stated Jackie Kalama.

Kamalani died May 5th in a crash on the Pali Highway. She was a passenger in a truck driven by 33-year-old Mark Garcia.

The medical examiner says Garcia was driving drunk.
