HONOLULU – Pi’ikea Kitamura collected his 200th career hit, Matt Cooper tossed eight scoreless innings for the win, and the University of Hawai’i Rainbow baseball team completed a sweep over UC Davis with a 6-0 win on senior day at Les Murakami Stadium.
The sweep was the first of the season for the ‘Bows (15-33, 10-14 Big West) who sent their eight seniors off in style in their final game at Les Murakami Stadium. Matt Cooper (3-7) allowed just five hits in his eight innings before senior Jon Flinn came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning. Cooper at one point retired 14 of 15 Aggie batters.
Stephen Ventimilia had two hits and two RBI including a 2-run single in UH’s four-run eighth inning to put the game away. Kalei Hanawahine and Austin Wobrock both had a hit with Hanawahine scoring a pair of runs and Wobrock adding two RBI.
Evan Wolf (3-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up one earned run on six hits in six complete innings of work. Spencer Henderson led the Aggies with two of their five hits on the afternoon.
Already up two runs, UH took advantage of four Aggie walks in the eighth inning, two with the bases loaded, to bust the game wide open. UC Davis reliever Max Cordy faced two batters in the inning, walking Max Duval and Wobrock to force in two runs. Duval did not register an at bat on the afternoon, but recorded three walks with a run and an RBI.
UH scored one run each in the first and fifth innings to go up 2-0. Kaeo Aliviado (1 H, 1 R) led off the game with a double then scored on Kitamura’s base hit. Hanawahine plated UH’s lone run in the fifth, leading off with a single then scoring from third on a Wobrock base hit.
Following the game, seniors Kris Butler, Max Duval, Corey MacDonald, Jon Flinn, Jim MacWilliam, Patrick O’Rourke, Connor Little, and Pi’ikea Kitamura were honored for their years of service to Rainbow baseball.
UH concludes the 2013 season on the road, traveling to UC Riverside for three Big West games. The series begins on Friday, May 24.
