A Hawaii vacation came to a tragic end for a California family.
Thirty-one year-old Kris Gungon apparently drowned while trying to rescue a woman who was in danger in the pool at the foot of Waimea Falls.
His wife and infant daughter looked on as Gungon went into the water.
Other people at the scene managed to rescue the woman, but Gungon was trapped under water for about 20 minutes.
Paramedics arrived shortly after, but were unable to revive him.
The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii is working with the family and read a statement they prepared.
“They said there’s no way to describe how awesome Kris was. What he was a great husband, a great father. He was a great friend, he was a great son, an awesome family member,” read Jessica Rich of VASH. “They said he was pretty funny. And they said there is a hole in our hearts today and we will miss him.”
Gungon is survived by his wife Denise and daughter – and the rest of his family.
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
