Prosecutors have increased the charges for a 24-year-old man accused of trying to gouge out another man’s eyes.
Jamal Morris allegedly attacked 30-year-old Maseeh Ganjali on May 15.
Prosecutors say because Ganjali’s injuries were so severe, they changed the charge against Morris to first-degree assault — which is a felony — and increased his bail from $1,000 to $100,000.
Morris is also accused of pouring vodka on a man and threatening to light him on fire.
His attorney asked the court for a mental evaluation.
“We’re going to be moving for a three panel on the felony charge and a one panel on the misdemeanor matter. And we’d ask the court that Mr. Morris be examined at the Hawaii State Hospital,” Morris’ attorney Alen Kaneshiro said.
The judge ordered a mental evaluation for Morris.
Morris is expected back in court at the end of the month.
