A deadly crash on the Pali Highway claimed the life of a popular plate lunch restaurant’s owner.

Family and friends have identified the victim as Takashi Kiyozuka, the owner of Grace’s Inn.

Honolulu Police say at about 10:30 a.m., Kiyozuka’s 2006 Acura SUV was traveling in the town-bound direction.

Witnesses told police Kiyozuka was driving about 80 miles per hour when his SUV went up an embankment and launched into the air. The SUV rolled over in mid-air before landing back on its wheels 60 yards away. The vehicle then skidded into oncoming traffic and crashed into a wall fronting Queen Emma Preschool.

“Witnesses said that the vehicle actually did a barrel roll over its vehicle and landed onto the roadway, somehow without striking any other vehicles,” HPD Lt. Robert Towne said.

A woman in her 60s, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Both directions of the Pali Highway were closed while police investigated.

The lanes were reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
