Friends of Ivanice Harris, whose body was found Monday evening, are devastated by her death.
Harris, of Oregon, was vacationing in Hawaii with friends to celebrate her 29th birthday. Her friends are now mourning and want information as to how the tragedy happened.
Friends gathered in Waikiki to hold a vigil for Harris and tossed flower lei into the ocean in her memory.
Heartbroken and angry, they say it’s the little things about Harris that they miss the most.
“Her smile, her smile. Her pretty smile,” Harris’ boyfriend Mark Miles said.
Harris was last seen early Thursday morning outside a Waikiki bar leaving with a man.
Her friends asked the public for help when she disappeared. Her nude body was later found near Yokohama Bay on Monday night.
Now, they’re asking the public for help in finding out how she died and who’s responsible.
“Nothing else matters who killed my friend, period. That’s all that matters at this point, to get her home and find who did it,” Harris’ friend Jillian Gibides said.
“We’re just trying to find a killer before another girl it happens to them, too. [Because] he’s still out there somewhere,” Harris’ friend Chelsea Harris said.
Friends and family say Harris worked as a paid escort. Those who help women try to get out say most are usually forced into it at a very young age.
“So by the time that they’re Ivy’s age, they really feel that they lack any choices to do anything else. They don’t have any job skills, they don’t have any formal education or training,” Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery Executive Director Kathryn Xian said.
Xian says many young girls are manipulated by their pimp that they will be protected and safe, but in reality, it’s the complete opposite.
“It’s highly violent. It places the girl and woman at risk on a daily basis for sex assault physical violence and emotional spiritual and mental trauma,” Xian said.
At this time, Honolulu Police are classifying the case as an unattended death.
Autopsy results are pending.
