The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Emergency Management along with the Department of Parks and Recreation, American Red Cross, Project 52, and the Hawaii State Department of Education are seeking volunteers to play the role of evacuees at the upcoming Makani Pahili Statewide Hurricane Exercise.
Volunteers will participate in the shelter process including registration and other sheltering activities.
The DEM is seeking up to 50 volunteers to participate in the exercise at each of the three locations on Oahu.
“Volunteers are critical to test our sheltering process and make the experience a realistic exercise for responders, Red Cross volunteers and others,” Training Officer for the Department of Emergency Management Hiro Toiya said..
Volunteers should be 18 years old or older. Those under 18 must have a parent or authorized guardian with them at the exercise.
Volunteers are needed at the following sites:

- Halawa District Park: 99-795 Iwaiwa St, Aiea, HI 96701

This is also an excellent opportunity to practice your family evacuation plans by coming to one of these shelter locations. Don’t forget to bring your family disaster supplies kit.
In a real emergency, hurricane shelters will have very minimal supplies. Experts will be on hand to review your kits and provide feedback.
