The strangling death of a woman, whose body was found in the ocean, and the case of a missing man on the Big Island may be connected.
Big Island Police tell KHON2 the new information could lead to a break in the murder case.
The woman killed was identified as 25-year-old Brittany-Jane Royal. She was reportedly camping with a 22-year-old man before she was found floating in waters off Kalapana.
Nearly every day this week, police have revealed new information on a deadly discovery on Hawaii Island.
On Tuesday, a fisherman found a woman’s body caught in fishing line in waters off Kalapana.
On Thursday, police classified the death as a murder, saying she was strangled.
On Friday, the woman was identified as Royal, who’s originally from Tustin, Calif. and recently moved to Kalapana.
Detectives also revealed she was with a man before her death.
Police say they’re looking for 22-year-old Boaz Johnson of Petersburg, Alaska.
“Based on information we received, they were camping together before her death. Of course we’d like to locate him because he’s missing and in regards to this investigation,” Hawaii Police Department Maj. Randy Apele said.
Police would not say why the two were camping together or their relationship.
Johnson last spoke with his family on Monday, a day before Royal’s body was discovered.
“Still making checks of the area as well as Kalapana area for any info we can obtain. Asking public with nay info to make contact with us to follow-up any leads or information,” Maj. Apele said.
Johnson is described as about 5 feet 6 inches tall or 5 feet 7 inches tall, 145 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call police.
KHON2 reached out to Royal’s family. Her aunt told KHON2 she did not to comment at this time.
