A 47-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Big Island on Saturday.

The Hawaii Police Department has identified the driver as Kurt Okada of a Kamuela address.

Police were called to the intersection of Kaiminani Drive and Wainana Place in North Kona at about 12:05 p.m.

Okada was operating a 1992 Kenworth dump truck, traveling west on Kaiminani Drive when he lost control and ran off the right side of the road, striking two parked cars, a rock wall, utility boxes and a tree. The car caught on fire and also ignited the tree.

Police say Okada was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Okada was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved, but police say speed was a factor in the crash.

This is the 16th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year compared with 14 at the same time last year.
