Hawaii Police open arson investigation after fire destroys home in Puna

Hawaii County Police say the fire on 38th Avenue in the Orchidland Estates subdivision destroyed a home on Thursday.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on May 30 in Puna area.

Authorities say that the Hawaii Fire Department Arson Canine Team determined that the fire was deliberately set.

Officials say the home is valued around $155,000.

Police are continuing the arson investigation and the public with information about this case is asked to contact Detective Wendall Carter at (808)961-2378 or wcarter@co.hawaii.hi.us.

Callers may also call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
