The suspect in a brutal sex assault on Maui was released from jail just one day before the alleged attack.
Maui Police say Charles Cowans sexually assaulted a woman on Friday.
According to public safety officials, Cowans was released from jail on Thursday after serving time for violating terms of his probation.
Cowans was sentenced in 1992 on attempted murder and kidnapping charges.
He is now being held at the Wailuku police station on $100,000 bail.
Cowans has been charged with first degree sexual assault and kidnapping.
