Deadline extended for Oahu rail transit art program

The deadline for professional artists to submit their qualifications for the Honolulu rail transit art program has been extended to June 27 due to high interest.

Local artists requested more time during a recent pre-submittal workshop sponsored by the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation that detailed the submission and procurement process.

Officials say nearly 200 people attended the workshop.

The $5 million transit art program will highlight and display site-specific work created by artists and integrated into the facility design at the 21 stations along the rail route and at the train control center in Waipahu.

Professional artists or artist teams are being asked to submit their qualifications and demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of Hawaii’s history, culture and traditions.

Station artwork opportunities will range from paving and floor designs to wall murals, grille work and architectural fencing, to glass work and integrated sculptural elements.
