It’s beach volleyball, also known as sand volleyball, and it’s all the rage.

“We are the first actually beach volleyball club to form here in the islands in Hawaii,” Director of Extreme Fitness Camp Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson said.

It’s the first club because of a growing need.

“Because the NCAA is now giving scholarships for beach volleyball as a competitive sport, we felt like Hawaii is the perfect environment because we have so many athletes who can do both, play indoor and outdoor. So, we thought a good idea would be to start a program,” President of Extreme Fitness Club Randy Morris said.

Those schools include the University of Hawaii.

Extreme Sports Club is growing in its second year and the graduates appear to have bright futures.

“Yeah, I’m heading to the University of Hawaii to do indoor volleyball, but a lot of the girls on the indoor team they do sand volleyball. So, I definitely plan on doing that because sand volleyball is just fun,” future UH volleyball player Taylor Higgins said.

“I’m heading to Missouri, so I have to go to summer school to sort of lighten the load for the fall because we’ll be traveling a lot in college volleyball,” future Missouri volleyball player Carly Kan said.

Lauren Uhr is going to try out for the team at MIT this fall and credits a lot of her success on the sand to her club.

“Playing with these teammates and Tanya is an amazing coach. And it’s just kind of a way to stay active and improve the indoor game as well,” Uhr said.

“It’s exciting, really exciting, again it’s more opportunities for our young ladies to go off to school and play ball. And if they don’t wan to play indoor, outdoor sand volleyball is an option,” Fuamatu-Anderson said.
