The former Kunia resident who’s accused of leaking classified U.S. government information worked for one of the best firms in Hawaii.

KHON2 wanted to know more about the company that Edward Snowden worked for and what kind of reputation the local office has.

The company has been voted one of the best places to work. It’s held that honor locally and nationally, leading some to believe that Snowden was a very rare type of employee.

Free childcare and college courses, flex time, and telecommuting. Those are just some of the benefits Booz Allen Hamilton offers its Hawaii employees.

“Nine of the years we’ve done ‘Best Places to Work’ list, they’ve made the list five times,” Hawaii Business Editor Steve Petranik said.

The magazine’s editor says companies are chosen largely by what employees say.

Booz Allen Hamilton last made the list of “Best Places to Work” last year. It is one of the largest private military contractors around working on areas like cyber security and technical support. The firm employs about 25,000 workers across the world.

Locally, it has an office in the Pacific Guardian Center in downtown Honolulu.

According to the magazine, the firm has been in Hawaii for 27 years, employs more than 300 workers and pays its salaried workers on average, nearly $100,000.

“They have benefits for domestic partners, they pay for your health club or gym membership and employees can buy company stock at a discount,” Petranik said.

KHON2 contacted the local and national offices of Booz Allen Hamilton. The company confirmed Snowden was an employee for less than three months on a team assigned to Hawaii and said, “News reports that this individual has claimed to have leaked classified information are shocking, and if accurate, this action represents a grave violation of the code of conduct and core values of our firm.”

“That employee does not strike me as standard Booz Hamilton employee. A lot of their employees are former military people, they’re very patriotic people,” Petranik said.

Fortune 500 has also named Booz Allen Hamilton one of the best companies to work for several times in the last decade.
