Microsoft retail store opens at Ala Moana Center

More than 2,000 people lined up over night at Ala Moana shopping center to be a part of the grand-opening and get exclusive tickets to a special invite only concert Thursday night.

One person in line told KHON2: “We arrived here at 9:20 p.m. and it’s just been crazy people playing music all night long.”

An enormous crowd filled the mauka parking lot of the Ala Moana Shopping Center Wednesday night.

People started lining up just after 9 p.m.

Microsoft provided plenty of food and water, but many didn’t sleep.

Marc Samonte was the first in line.

“We got here around 9 o’clock it been pretty loud people behind us were playing music,” Samonte said.

Around 7 a.m. excited customers were moved into the mall to wait another few hours until the store opened.

Many who waited in line says the wait was well worth it to see the store and high-tech items and get tickets for an exclusive invited only concert Thursday night at Kakaako Waterfront Park.

The concert will feature Macklemore and the Neon Trees.

“To be honest we are here to see Macklemore and Neon Trees but the store is right across from Apple so I want to see the rivalry it will bring,” Honolulu resident, Chaneal Rodriguez said.

2,500 tickets were given out for the concert.

The first 200 people in line also got tickets to attend an exclusive ‘meet and greet’ with the band.

The 2,700 foot store has about 40 local employees, but connecting with the culture of Hawaii was also important to Microsoft.

“It’s the concert it’s the store opening but other thing we do is make donations we are giving 1.3 million dollars to local Hawaiian charities,” Microsoft, Jonathan Adashek said.
