A 23-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle crash on the Big Island.
The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Friday when Hawaii Island Police were called to Kalanianaole Avenue near Kioea Street in Hilo.
Authorities say the driver was traveling west-bound on Kalanianaole Avenue when he ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole and a rock wall.
The driver, later identified as Joseph Nieves, Jr. of Hilo, died at the scene.
An 18-year-old male passenger, of Hilo, was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in crash and was later transferred to a hospital in Honolulu.
Police say the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
This is the 18th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year compared to 14 at the same time last year.
