On Jan. 9, Hawaii Island Police say the 3-year-old boy died after he fell out of the cab of a pickup truck and then was run over.
Police say the incident happened on the shoulder area leading to the driveway of a retail establishment off Route 190 in Kalaoa.
An investigation revealed that the boy’s sister thought their father had parked the truck. She then opened the rear passenger door and the boy fell out.
The father, not knowing that the boy had fallen out, continued up the driveway and ran over the child.
Officials identified the boy as Joel Peter.
Police say the Peter’s 32-year-old wife and three girls, ages 4, 4 and 6, who were in the cab, as well as two male relatives who were in the bed of the truck, were not injured.
