Maui officials investigating suspicious cane fires

After a recent rash of sugar cane fires, the Maui Fire Department is asking for the public’s help in finding the person or people responsible.

In the last two months, there have been eight cane fires that officials believe were intentionally set.

The fires have burned more than 42 acres and caused $182,000 in damage to crops.

The incidents have also cost the fire department thousands of dollars in manpower.

No one was injured in any of the fires, but some of the fires have come close to homes and businesses.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call Maui Police at (808) 224-6425.
