Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell hosted a celebration for the long-awaited reopening of the city’s McCully Pool on Thursday.

It’s something McCully area residents have wanted for seven years while the community pool was being fixed.

Swimmer Kanta Saito: “Yeah, they didn’t have the pool.”

KHON2’s Jai Cunningham: “What do you think of the pool? Are you happy the pool is open?

Swimmer Kanta Saito: “Yeah, I’m happy!”

This summer, there are 127 kids signed up for the McCully Summer Fun program compared to just 50 last year. That’s more than a 150 percent increase.

Think the newly renovated pool had anything to do with that? KHON2 posed that question to one summer funner.

KHON2’s Jai Cunningham: “If I told you what is your favorite thing about summer fun what would it be?

Summer Fun participant Ilikea Piiohia: “Play dodge ball.”

KHON2’s Jai Cunningham: “What’s second favorite?”

Summer Fun participant Ilikea Piiohia: “Swimming!”

Swimmers that KHON2 spoke with are thrilled the pool is back open.

“Wonderful, just wonderful! It’s great to have this exercise here,” swimmer Gwen Goo said.

Goo was joined by a handful of other ladies who were doing water aerobics. It’s something that helps keep them young. Just ask 75-year-old Ellen Nihei what the pool means to the kupuna.

“Yeah, we lost a lot of people who used to come here every day. They used to come because of their legs, they were having problems walking. They would come every day, exercise,” Nihei said.

“Well, you didn’t get to do that here. So, you would have to go elsewhere if you needed to. So, for me, it’s been terrific because I live a couple of blocks away and it’s wonderful,” Goo said.

It keeps them young at heart as well.
