A house in Kaimuki went up in flames Sunday.

The fire broke out just before 6 p.m. when flames tore through the house located on Kaimuki Avenue near Kapahulu Avenue.

A woman who lives across the street says it started off small then quickly erupted.

“I smelled the smoke first and then went outside and saw the fire trucks coming around the corner,” neighbor Lauren Payne said. “There was just a little bit of flames and I went back inside to check on the dogs because I left the gate open and when I came back out the whole house was engulfed by that time.”

The thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.

“As firefighters arrived, they saw heavy black smoke billowing out of the building. They did a real quick attack and were able to knock down the fire,” Honolulu Fire Department Captain Christopher Ah Mook Sang said.

“I just hope everyone’s okay,” Payne said.

Two people lived in the house — a mother and her grown son.

Fire officials say the man was at home when the fire broke out, but his mother wasn’t. The man managed to get out of the home safely.

“It appears the fire may have started in the back portion of the home,” Ah Mook Sang said.

The fire gutted the home and a vehicle that was parked in the garage was damaged in the fire.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring homes.

The American Red Cross says it’s offered to help the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
