A Tennessee man was found unresponsive Wednesday afternoon while snorkeling in waters off Nualolo Kai along the Na Pali Coast.
According to the Kauai Fire Department, the 48-year-old man was part of charter group that had stopped in the area to allow patrons to swim and snorkel. According to reports, fellow swimmers found the man in distress at around 2:40 p.m. and brought him to shore.
Bystanders performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. Rescuers then transported the man to Waimea Canyon Ball Park.
The victim was taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet released the man’s identity.
This is Kauai’s 12th drowning so far this year.
