UPDATE: Man charged after driving stolen dump truck onto Waikiki beach

At about 11:40 p.m. Saturday night a man took control of a white dump truck with a trailer parked on Kapahulu Avenue just past the Monsarrat split.

It was first called in to police as a hazardous driver. He was seen driving down Kapahulu and onto Diamond Head Road. The man eventually turned around and was seen barreling through Kapiolani Park.

The truck hit an HPD unit on Kalakaua by the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial before continuing west. The driver ended up passing through the Kapahulu intersection and going the wrong way on Kalakaua before driving onto the sidewalk and then onto the beach near the Paokalani Avenue intersection a little before midnight.

The man jumped into the water and swam out a few hundred yards.  He made his way back towards Diamond Head while HPD and HFD crews watched from the shore and the sky. The man then came back to shore at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

He was arrested by police after coming ashore at Sans Souci Beach.

Police arrested the suspect on two counts of criminal property damage, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and reckless endangering.

The dump truck was removed from the beach at about 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
