It’s a new twist on an old trick, thieves using reputable businesses to get your personal information.
“They’ll say you used our services in the past please fill this out and in return you’ll get a gift card or a little check,” Hawaii Better Business bureau communications director Timothy Caminos said.
Caminos says the gift card or cash is usually between $20-$25 dollars.
“This ones a little different in the fact that it looks very real they’re asking questions that consumers would normally see on surveys,” Caminos said.
Caminos says the questions are usually What do you think about our customer service? or What do you think about the products and services that we are offering?
“Now the twist is at the very end they’re asking you for personal information so they can identify you,” Caminos said.
The Hawaii BBB offers these tips if you’re a victim:
- Run a virus scan on your computer to ensure that nothing was downloaded
- Put a credit watch on your credit report so you can monitor all charges
- If you gave up your credit card information , cancel your card immediately or if you gave up your bank account information, contact your bank.
“These surveys are asking for your social security number, credit card and address information and right there that’s a red flag for consumers delete the email,” Caminos said.
