A Kalihi family is on edge after a brazen burglary early Tuesday morning.
A laptop, DVD player, and a watch were stolen, but what concerns the family even more is how calmly and easily the burglar slipped out of the house.
The 12-year-old girl got up around 12:40 a.m. to go to the bathroom and after turning on the light in the hallway, she saw a shadow in the other bedroom.
“It’s just standing there. So I look to my right and I just freeze up. I don’t know what to do,” the 12-year-old girl said.
What terrified her even more is that the man just walked right up to her as she was standing in the hallway.
The 12-year-old girl: “And he starts to gesture me to be quiet and not scream.”
KHON2′s Manolo Morales: “Meaning what? What did he do exactly?”
The 12-year-old girl: “Like shhh.”
She says the man walked right past her, down the stairs, and out the door. She then woke up her parents, who reported it to the police.
She feels bad that she couldn’t do anything to stop him.
“In my mind, it was telling me to scream and scream, but I knew where that would take me,” the 12-year-old girl said.
Her mother is shaken up by it, but is relieved that her daughter did exactly what she did.
“Very scary, especially, I’m thinking about my daughter. What if he hurt my daughter? What if he did something to my daughter?” burglary victim Editha Magsanide said.
The family says the burglar apparently entered the house through a window that might have been left unlocked.
The family plans to be more careful and add some security measures — anything to make them all feel safer again.
“Still paranoid. A little scared to sleep at night,” the 12-year-old girl said.
KHON2 asked police what one should do in that situation. They say the girl did the best thing she could have done.
Police say, if possible, try to get a good look at the suspect.
Investigators are working on a sketch of the suspect.
