Scoring a prime spot for Independence Day festivities meant spending the night at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Paul Brewer drove all the way in from Waianae Wednesday night, setting up and cooking up oysters, steaks and kalua pig.

People were allowed to stay overnight, but vehicles were only allowed to enter starting at 4 a.m.   Honolulu police officers first opened the Atkinson Street entrance to Ala Moana Park and then the ewa entrance about 10 minutes later. By 4:30 a.m. all parking spots were taken and pretty soon most of the Magic Island lawn was covered by tents.

“We came down about 5:30 yesterday and the spot is the most important thing,” said Julius Maeva.

After all the early morning excitement getting into the park everyone was looking forward to a day in the sun and some fireworks later tonight at 8:30.
