Hilo woman dies after being struck by vehicle

A 61-year-old Hilo woman is dead following a traffic accident late Tuesday night.

The accident happened at about 9 p.m. near the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Kalakaua Street in downtown Hilo.

According to police, the woman was crossing Kamehameha Avenue just south of Kalakaua Street from the mauka to makai direction when she was struck by a 1998 Honda four-door sedan traveling south.

Fire Department crews took the pedestrian to the Hilo Medical Center, where she later died.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old woman, and her passengers were not injured.

According to police, the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk.

Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The victim’s identity has not been released at this time.

This is the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 14 at this time last year.
