Firefighters put out brush fire in Waianae

Waianae brush fire

Honolulu firefighters put out a six-acre brush fire in Waianae Thursday night.

The incident happened at about 5 p.m.

Officials say smoke and flames were seen on the hillside above Paheehee Road when crews arrived on the scene.

Seven companies and the fire department’s air one helicopter responded to help put out the fire.

Gusting winds and dry brush spread the fire, up and over the ridgeline, before crews could get a handle on it.

“Every year it happens like this, when it’s dry, especially with the wind,” Waianae resident Cal Domen said. “But it’s real dangerous out here, cause we have homes. We have some Hawaiian homes people out here.”

No structures were damaged and the fire was brought under control at about 6:15 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
