School bus routes that had been cancelled are being added back into the mix for students in Aiea, Halawa and Pearl city.
That area was part of a Department of Education pilot program consisting of 30 schools.
They call it their “Get on Board” initiative.
By working with school bus vendors the DOE was able to reduce the number of buses in the area and the number of trips, while at the same time adding routes that were cut.
“Getting that confidence back, that the department can manage this enterprise and do it effectively and at a cost that’s reasonable,” Department of Education Office of School Facilities and Support Services Assistant Superintendent Raymond L’Heureux said.
Outside the pilot area, schools with bus route cuts will not be reinstated this year.
The DOE is working to change that for next school year.
