Houghtailing incident deemed safe after false hostage alarm

It was like a scene out of a movie Monday as more than a dozen police cars swarmed a home in the Houghtailing area.

The incident started off with someone calling a family member and saying they were being held hostage in Kalihi.

The Honolulu Police Department responded with as much manpower as they could but it turned out to be a false alarm.

“It didn’t turn out to be as elaborate as the call came in. So of course community safety is always an issue which is why we had such a large police presence to make sure things were safe,” HPD Major Lester Hite said.

A man inside the house was arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor.

Alcohol and marijuana were also found in the home.
