A multi-vehicle accident shut down a portion of the H-3 freeway and sent black smoke billowing out of the Harano tunnel on Monday.

Police say the crash involved six-vehicles, and happened at the entrance of the tunnel in the Kaneohe-bound direction.

One vehicle caught fire and created a lot of smoke.

Honolulu-bound lanes of the tunnel were contra-flowed to help ease traffic.

Three people were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

All lanes of the H-3 were reopened about 9:40 p.m.
