Hawaii Island police are investigating a shooting in Kailua-Kona.
The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Monday at a home on Manu Mele Street. Police responded to a report of an attempted suicide in progress.
According to officials, officers contacted a 33-year-old man who was standing outside the house holding a rifle upon arrival. Police ordered the man to put the weapon down, but he refused to follow their instructions. The man attempted to use the rifle to harm himself.
Police say a 31-year-old veteran officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the man in his right shoulder and causing him to drop the rifle.
The man was taken to Kona Community Hospital in stable condition.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Police will conduct a criminal and administrative investigation into the shooting.
