Transpac Yacht Race holds special meaning for Japan tsunami survivor

Ten Quarter

Yuichi Takahashi of Japan lost his wife and their child in the deadly earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

He didn’t think he’d sail again but after seeing the support for victims after the disaster, Takahashi decided to sail in this year’s Transpac race as a sign of thanks.

“He couldn’t see his family that was lost in the tsunami, but he feels that they supported them in the race. They are with him all the time,” translator for Yuichi Takahashi said.

The last boat crossed the finish line this morning.

Takahashi’s boat Ten Quarter finished first in his class.

All the winners of this year’s Transpac race were honored Thursday night at a reception in Waikiki.
