Driving around Ala Moana Center is no easy task these days. A lot of it is thanks to construction on the Ewa end of the mall.

Major construction is going on at the mall to replace Sears with Bloomingdale’s, so the Piikoi Street entrance is closed and the ramp has been rerouted.

“You have to go through all these cones into one level down the other level again and up another level and then get to the destination, but it takes forever,” area resident Kimi Smith said.

The right mauka-bound lane is also closed on Piikoi Street, clogging traffic there and on Ala Moana Boulevard, as cars turn into Piikoi.

The mall suggests using the entrances on Ala Moana Boulevard and Atkinson Drive. So that has created traffic woes on that side of the mall.

“I’ve lived here like two months, two years. This is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” area resident Jon Yamauchi said.

Even non-residents notice the difference.

“I’m a frequent visitor here. We stay at this hotel all the time and just recently at this visit here, as a matter of fact, the first time I’ve noticed the traffic being so heavy and being so difficult to cross the street,” Nebraska visitor Jim Shawn said.

Residents in nearby condos have met with city officials to complain about the traffic. Ala Moana Center says a traffic study was approved by the city.

KHON2 asked if any traffic lights will be adjusted to ease the congestion and was told that the mall will be monitoring traffic flow and will make corrections as needed.

Construction is supposed to last two years. Some people are already dreading the holiday rush.
