Anyone offered a discounted bus pass at a bus stop, beware! It could be a counterfeit.
On Friday, the city showed a counterfeit pass that was recently confiscated by a bus driver. It was made using a high-tech printer, recreating a sticker for a portion of the front of the card.
“They put it over the top. And because these are flash cards, when the bus transit passenger boards, they can put their finger over April. Flash it to the driver, the driver sees June and let’s them get on the bus,” Transportation Services Director Michael Formby said.
The hologram edges are a dead giveaway that the month is wrong.
One bus rider KHON2 spoke to knows better.
“I wouldn’t buy it. Because if they find out, I go jump on a bus and they look at it and somehow figure out that it’s counterfeit, then I lose out right?” bus rider Van Martinez said.
That’s exactly what the mayor pointed out.
“If someone comes up to and says I would like to sell you a bus pass. It’s a good deal, it’s only 15 bucks. There’s a good chance it could be counterfeit. And we encourage people not to do that,” Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said.
Purchasing a counterfeit bus pass is illegal and the city’s lawyers have it on their radar.
“And we’re going to do so keeping in mind that we need to be mindful of minimizing disruption to the bus patrons and the bus schedules,” City & County of Honolulu Corporation Counsel Donna Leong said.
Only one fake pass has been discovered, but with 221,000 riders a day, one can imagine the concern.
The real bus passes are available all around Oahu.
