Maui man dies after traffic crash in Lahaina

A 19-year-old Maui man is dead after a traffic crash in Lahaina Thursday evening.

The accident happened shortly after 8 p.m. on L. Honoapiilani Road fronting the Kahana Reef condominium complex.

According to officials, a 2003 black Yamaha Zuma moped was traveling south on L. Honoapiilani Road when it crossed the center line and collided head on with a 2011 Ford Fusion.

Police identified the operator of the moped as Chanse Uyeda. He was not wearing a helmet.

Uyeda was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical center where he later died of his injuries.

Police say the driver of the Ford was a 37-year-old Virginia man. His 37-year-old wife was the passenger in the vehicle. The couple did not sustain any injuries from the crash and both were wearing seat belts.

At this time, it is unknown if speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the crash.

This is Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality for 2013 as compared to 15 at the same time last year.
